You can also explore the tropical rainforest, the Arctic, and the savanna in the zoo's immersive habitats. Copenhagen Zoo is more than just a place to see animals; it's a place to learn, play, and have fun.
What Animals can I see in Copenhagen Zoo?
Copenhagen Zoo is home to over 3,000 animals, representing more than 250 species. We have mentioned some of the most popular animals and enclosures below.
The Elephant House
Designed by the renowned architect Norman Foster, this spacious and modern facility houses the zoo’s beautiful Asian elephants. You can watch them interact, play, and bathe in their indoor and outdoor enclosures.
The Panda House
Opened in 2019, this state-of-the-art habitat is the only place in Scandinavia where you can see giant pandas. The two pandas, Mao Sun and Xing Er, are on loan from China and enjoy a specially designed environment that mimics their natural habitat. They mostly just munch on bamboo leaves, but they’re so adorable that it’s hard to leave.
The Lion Den
Experience the thrill of seeing the king of the jungle up close at the lion den, where you can observe a pride of African lions. If you’re lucky, you’ll be visiting when there are lion cubs, and you can enjoy watching them play and tease their parents.
The Arctic Ring
Explore the frozen world of the Arctic at the zoo's unique exhibit, where you can see polar bears, Arctic foxes, and reindeer. You can also walk through an underwater tunnel and watch the polar bears swim and dive above you, a truly amazing experience.
The Tropical Zoo
Escape to the lush and exotic rainforest at the tropical zoo, where you can encounter a variety of animals, such as spiders, sloths, crocodiles, snakes, and birds. You can also enjoy the warmth and humidity of the tropical climate and the beauty of the colorful butterflies, plants, and flowers.
Playground and Kids Zoo
Let your kids have some fun and burn off some energy at the zoo's playgrounds, where they can climb, slide, swing, and jump. They can also wave at the cute bunnies, pet the goats, or visit the farm animals in the stable.
Why should I visit Copenhagen Zoo?
Copenhagen Zoo is not only a place to see animals, but also a place to interact with them and learn more about them. Copenhagen Zoo is furthermore deeply committed to wildlife conservation and environmental education, engaging in global efforts to preserve species and habitats.
The zoo offers a range of activities for visitors of all ages, such as:
Feeding Times
Watch the animals enjoy their meals and listen to the zookeepers talk about their diets, habits, and personalities. You can see feeding times for different animals throughout the day, such as the elephants, the pandas, the penguins, and the sea lions.
Zoolab
Here, the kids can feel the fur of different animals, see skulls and bones, do a bit of drawing, and meet insects as ants, cockroaches, and sometimes weirder insects such as stick insects.
Animal Encounters
As an add on to your visit, you can purchase a ticket for an animal encounter, where you get to go behind the scenes and meet the animals in a different way. Get close to the cute giant pandas, feed the giraffes, watch a tiger training, or learn more about the cheeky penguins as you feed them fish and watch them play.
Panoramic view
Climb the 43.5-meter-tall Zoo Tower and be rewarded with an unbeatable panoramic view of Copenhagen and all the animals below. On clear days it’s possible to see all the way to Sweden!
When Should I Visit?
Copenhagen Zoo is open every day all year round, and with the combination of animals from all continents, there will always be animals outside enjoying their favorite season. For most of the animals it’s also possible to see them in their inside enclosure, so you won’t miss your favorite animal no matter what time a year you visit.
Opening hours differ depending on the season. If you are travelling with smaller kids, it’s possible to rent a wagon for them to sit in, if their legs need a break.
