The zoo can be easily accessed via public transportation, with the Artis tram stop line 14 providing access. The zoo also has 27 historically significant buildings, bridges, and ponds, many of which are still used as animal enclosures.

The zoo's name, Natura Artis Magistra, is displayed over three gates, but because only the middle gate with "Artis" was typically open, the zoo became commonly known as Artis. The zoo is home to around 750 different species, and it is dedicated to connecting people with nature.

Artis features a variety of animal habitats, such as an African savannah, a tropical rainforest, and Lemur World. Visitors can see an assortment of animals, including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and penguins.
