The collection was donated to Oslo City after his death in 1944. It consists of about 1150 paintings, 7700 drawings and watercolors, 18000 prints showing more than 700 different motifs and 13 sculptures.
In addition, there were almost 500 print plates, 2240 books, notebooks, documents, photographs, art tools, accessories and furniture. Additional works by Edvard Munch and his extensive collection of letters was bequeathed to the City of Oslo by his sister Inger Munch after her death.
