The Stavanger Art Museum came from Stavanger Art Association's regular gallery. The history of the collection started in February 1865 when consul Jens Z. Kielland became chairman of the newly established art association.
They have a unique collection of paintings by Lars Hertervig (1830-1902) who was born in Tysvær outside Stavanger. His romantic and personal landscapes still makes a great impact on the visitors.
