Stockholm city break – 2-day itinerary

2024-07-11

Day 1

For your first day in the city, we have an itinerary filled with classic points of interest in and around the city center, and of course experience the unique landscape of the Stockholm archipelago. Feel free to adjust times if necessary to fit your schedule.

9:00 AM Breakfast in Old Town

Stockholm’s Old Town (Gamla Stan) dates back to the 13th century and is well-preserved, making this one of the coziest places in town with a wide variety of cafés, shops, and depending on the season, even markets. Soak up the Stockholm atmosphere and enjoy the architecture for a great start to the day with some breakfast.

10:00 AM Explore Old Town

Cobblestone, narrow streets, and colorful houses are some of the charming things about Old Town. Take your time to explore this historic part of the city, and if you’d like some pictures of your Stockholm visit, this is the place!

Some must-see highlights include:

  • Stortorget: The main square of Old Town
  • Storkyrkan: Stockholm Cathedral, a beautiful and historic church
  • Mårten Trotzigs Street: the narrowest street in Stockholm and at its narrowest point it measures only 90 centimeters.

11:00 AM The Royal Palace

Not far from Old Town, you’ll find the Royal Palace, also known as Stockholm Palace or Kungliga Slottet in Swedish. This is one of the largest palaces in Europe and serves as the official residence of the Swedish monarch. Located right by the water, this magnificent palace is a must-see destination in Stockholm.

12:00 PM Under the Bridges boat tour

Just a short walk from the Royal Palace, you'll find Strömkajen, where our boat tour  departs. Experiencing Stockholm from the water is a must! As you relax on the boat tour, you'll see the inner city, Old Town, Södermalm, Lilla, and Stora Essingen, the new Hammarby Sjöstad area, and the green parks of Djurgården glide by.

Getting a bit hungry? Enjoy a Swedish Fika on the boat! Fika is a beloved Swedish tradition where you take a break to savor coffee and something sweet. Onboard, you can order coffee and a classic Swedish cinnamon bun among other sweet treats and sandwiches.

2:15 PM Grab some lunch

Time for lunch! We suggest grabbing something light near Kungsträdgården, just a short walk from Strömkajen. This urban oasis, dating back to the 17th century, offers plenty of dining options. Enjoy tree-lined pathways, lush lawns, and beautiful flower beds – perfect for a small picnic.

4:00 PM City Hall & Riddarholmen

Now it's time to visit Stockholm City Hall, known as Stadshuset in Swedish. This is one of the city's most iconic buildings, featuring red brick walls, a 100-meter tower, and elegant arches by the water. Look up at the tower, and you'll see three golden crowns symbolizing Sweden. You might also spot some happy newlywed couples, as many people choose to get married here.

From Stockholm City Hall, it's a 10-minute walk to Riddarholmen. Here, you'll find Riddarholmskyrkan, the burial site of many Swedish kings and queens. Enjoy the quieter, more peaceful atmosphere and take in the panoramic views of Stockholm.

6:30 PM Dinner cruise

This dinner cruise  will take you to and from Drottningholm, the royal family's private residence. Enjoy views of the unique Swedish landscape as you savor a sunset and deliciously prepared food. The menu features classic flavors inspired by the archipelago and traditional Swedish cuisine. A perfect end to your first day in town!

Day 2

For your second day, we are moving around a bit more in Stockholm so you’ll have a chance to experience different neighborhoods. You can walk, but you’ll need a little more time between the activities. Another fun option is using the Hop On-Hop Off boat. That way you can max out your day with even more sightseeing.

10:00 AM Archipelago tour

Whether you love nature, photography or simply looking to experience more of Stockholm, a boat tour in the archipelago is an unforgettable experience. The archipelago, with its over 30,000 islands, offers breathtaking natural beauty that you really should experience on the water. This landscape is a unique view and you don’t want to miss it.

11:30 AM Strandvägen

After the boat tour, you’ll be back at Strandvägen, one of the most stunning streets in Stockholm. From here you can either walk or hop on the hop on-hop off boat, to Djurgården. Either way, take a moment here to appreciate the beauty on the way there. Strandvägen is one of the most exclusive and expensive streets in Stockholm and it’s not hard to understand why with the historical architecture, modern amenities, and scenic water views.

12:00 PM Djurgården

Djurgården, a part of National City Park, is the perfect place to be, year-round. Almost everything you need is right here. You’ll find some of the most visited museums in all of Sweden, the amusement park Gröna Lund and lush green spaces and walking trails.

Some of the highlights include:

  • ABBA The Museum: A very fun and interactive museum, perfect for all ages
  • Skansen: Open-air museum and zoo
  • The Vasa Museum: A museum dedicated to the well-preserved 17th-century warship Vasa

If you’d rather just stroll around the island, please do! It’s truly a great place to just be. Grab some lunch and enjoy the views.

3:00 PM Explore Södermalm

Why not hop on the boat again, but this time, hop off at Fotografiska or Slussen. Södermalm is the bohemian, creative, and trendy neighborhood in Stockholm. It has a very different atmosphere from previous places in this itinerary, so it’s worth the visit! This area is perfect for visiting independent boutiques and second-hand stores. Don't miss the stunning views from Mosebacke and the vibrant street art in Hornstull.

5:00 PM Views från Skinnarviksberget or Ivar Los Park

Skinnarviksberget is one of the highest natural points in Stockholm, guaranteeing you beautiful views over the city center, Old Town and, the waters surrounding the city. Locals often come here for picnics and to watch the sunset, making it a beautiful spot to visit all year round. Nearby, Ivar Los Park is another excellent picnic spot, providing a serene environment and equally impressive views. Both locations are perfect for unwinding and soaking in the beauty of Stockholm.

7:00 PM Shrimp Cruise with scenic views

You can’t leave Stockholm without eating seafood! Swedes love our shrimp and why not have them on all-you-can-eat cruise? Delight in shrimp accompanied by bread, sauces, butter, and the Swedish delicacy Västerbotten cheese. Enjoy a glass of sparkling wine (or one of the many non-alcoholic beverages) in the sunset with our Shrimp Cruise.

Visiting in the wintertime? Then try our Christmas dining cruise instead! We’ll serve a classic Christmas buffet with herring, cured salmon, pate, meats and charcuteries. And of course a lot of sweet treats at the dessert buffet!

Enjoy your trip to Stockholm and make the most of every moment. We're confident that this city will leave you longing for more…
