Three days in Stockholm

2024-07-15

Day 1 – City Sightseeing

Welcome to your first day in the city! We at Stromma, Northern Europe's leading provider of sustainable tours and excursions, have crafted an itinerary featuring classic points of interest in and around the city center. You'll also get to experience the unique landscape of the Stockholm archipelago. Feel free to adjust the times to suit your schedule.

9:00 AM Breakfast in Kungsträdgården

Kungsträdgården is an urban oasis located in the heart of Stockholm. While it is most famous for its stunning cherry blossoms in the spring, the park offers beauty year-round. Both locals and tourists frequent Kungsträdgården to enjoy the tree-lined paths, gorgeous green lawns, and beautiful flower arrangements. Have a steady breakfast around here before heading to the first activity of the day.

10:30 AM Boat sightseeing tour through Djurgården canal

Djurgården is a part of the Royal National City Park and a real Stockholm gem! The Royal Canal Tour takes you to the calm and stunning canal of Djurgården. Along the canal you'll see historic buildings, museums, and green spaces. On the way back, you'll enjoy a stunning view of Stockholm's skyline – a sight you can only experience from the water! This is the perfect way to experience Stockholm at the start of your visit to see as much as possible. This is a perfect opportunity to try Swedish fika. Grab some coffee and a cinnamon bun on the boat.

11:30 AM Walk to Old Town

Stockholms Old Town, Gamla Stan in Swedish, is one of the best preserved old towns in Europe. Make sure to soak up the stunning views and historical architecture. You’ll walk on cobblestone, stroll through narrow streets, and don’t forget to look up at the colorful houses. Then make your way to the Royal Palace for another highlight of the day.

12:15 PM The Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace

This is a fun (and free!) event that you should try to fit into your visit. It happens once per day and features guards in traditional uniforms, precise military drills, and a parade. The ceremony is a great way to experience Swedish culture and history up close. It's quite a unique experience.

Please note that the time can vary depending on the day of the week and the season.

1:00 PM Lunch in Old Town

Old Town has great food, the coziest restaurants, and cafés so just pick your favorite. Since it’s your first day here, here are some recommendations on what to eat.

  • Meatballs: Delicious meatballs, buttery mashed potatoes, cream sauce, and some tart and sweetness from the lingonberries. A classic for a reason.
  • Toast Skagen: Toasted bread with a mixture of shrimp shrimp, mayonnaise, and crème fraîche, seasoned with lemon juice and dill. Often topped with some roe and some more dill.
  • Salmon with dill potatoes: The salmon can be grilled or cured alongside potatoes that have been stewed in a creamy dill sauce.

2:00 PM Stockholm City Hall & Riddarholmen

Stockholm City Hall is a beautiful building with a gorgeous view over the water. You can’t miss its 106-meter tower topped with Sweden's traditional three crowns. Built in red brick with classic arches, it's also a popular spot for weddings, so you might see a bride or two during your visit.

A short walk from there you’ll find Riddarholmen and Riddarholmen Church, the burial site of many Swedish kings and queens. This is a calmer and quiet part of Stockholm with a gorgeous panoramic view often featured in movies.

4:00 PM Explore Östermalm

Time for a new area! Östermalm is one of the more exclusive neighborhoods in Stockholm. These houses date back to the 19th century and have elegant and stunning architecture. Around here you can visit Östermalms market hall, the charming Humlegården park, high-end stores and why don’t you end with Strandvägen?

Strandvägen is a prestigious boulevard right by the water. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or to sit on a bench and enjoy the views.

6.30 PM Dinner cruise archipelago

One of the most popular things to do in Stockholm is to explore by boat. Combine it with dinner for the perfect ending of your first day.

This dinner cruise in the archipelago lets you take in the stunning Swedish landscape as you enjoy a sunset and a meal crafted to perfection. The menu highlights classic flavors inspired by the archipelago and traditional Swedish dishes.

Day 2: Daytrip to the island Fjäderholmarna

Get the most out of your trip to Stockholm by seeing more of Sweden. Locals often go on excursions to some of our favorite islands, and we recommend you do the same. There are a few to choose from but we can highly recommend Fjäderholmarna, just a 30-minute boat ride from the city. Want to explore more? Take a look at all of our day trips here! Vaxholm is another great destination.

Stromma’s boats go all day, but this is the first departure of the morning. Get an early start to enjoy the island in full.

11:00 AM Stroll around the island

Just start with getting a feeling for the atmosphere of the island, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxed stroll. You’ll pass handicraft shops, restaurants, lush, green nature, and the classical cliffs by the water.

12:00 PM Time for lunch

Either bring your lunch for a cozy picnic or buy something light at Systrarna Degen, Röda Villan, and the Restaurang Rökeriet deli. The cliffs by the water are amazing for a picnic if the weather allows.

1:00 PM Sunbath and relax

This is your time to relax and do what you please. Find a spot under a tree, sunbathe by the cliffs and take a swim or why not get some coffee at one of the cafes and read a book in the sun?

3:00 PM Visit the handicraft shops

This is such a delightful activity! There are shops in tiny little houses with handmade pottery, a cool glass-blowing studio with amazing crafts and we can’t forget the handmade chocolate pralines at Fjäderhlmarna Choklad. P.S. Handmade ice cream at Röda Villan also counts if it’s time for a sweet treat!

5:00 PM Activity

If you’re hungry, grab some dinner, but if you’re up for something fun you can play Boule, or Pétanque as it is called in France at Röda Villan.

6:30 PM Delicious dinner

If you’re here during the summer you most likely need to make reservations beforehand. For a nice sit-down dinner, we can recommend Fjäderholmarnas Krog or Restaurang Rökeriet. Try some fish or seafood, it’s always fresh and really tasty.
