Orpheus - The Summer Opera Performance of 2025
Orpheus and Eurydice have held a significant place in Swedish opera and remain the most frequently depicted story in various productions at Drottningholm Palace Theatre during the 20th century. In August 2025, George Philipp Telemann’s Orpheus will be performed for the first time.
The work was rediscovered as late as the end of the 20th century, and in Telemann’s version, a new main character is introduced: Orasia, Queen of Thrace, who is tragically in love with Orpheus. If the core message of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth is that one cannot go back and change one’s fate, the addition of Orasia conveys that one cannot alter another person’s life path either.
"This is an absolute masterpiece that deserves to be known by a wide audience. While everyone knows the myth of Orpheus, they will be surprised to realize they have never encountered this opera before!"
— Francesco Corti, Musical Director and Conductor
When the opera was rediscovered, some sections, such as transitions between arias, were missing. Francesco Corti incorporates music by Telemann and other contemporary composers from Hamburg to create a complete Drottningholm version. Most of the text is sung in German, with additional arias in Italian and French.
The director for the production is Italian Elena Barbalich, who teaches directing at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. Elena Barbalich has a deep interest in ancient mythology:
"In my version of Orpheus, I will attempt to unravel some of the mysteries hidden within this ancient myth."
