The History of M/S Östanå I
One of Strömma Kanalbolaget's historic archipelago ships is M/S Östanå I. The ship began to be built at William Lindbergs Verkstads- och Varfs AB in 1905, but construction stopped due to a strike at the shipyard. This meant that the parts of M/S Östanå I that were already finished were moved to Bergsund's shipyard, which was able to complete the boat in 1906. The customer was Ångfartygs AB Östanå, and the boat was deployed on the route Stockholm - Vaxholm - Ytterby - Ytterbystrand - Östanå, as well as various piers on Ljusterö - Östra Lagnö. In 1913, Östanå I was sold to Waxholmsbolaget but continued to follow the same route. In 1967 Erik Jägerborg and Leif Rasmussen bought M/S Östanå I and the steam boiler was removed. Erik and Leif formed AB Roslagens Skeppslag and the restoration of M/S Östanå I continued. In 1973, the ship was finally in operable condition again. In 1985, the steam engine was replaced by a diesel engine. M/S Östanå I was bought by Strömma Kanalbolaget in 1984.
